We do a "Photo of the Day" and it's proven to be very popular. We run a mix of current photos (professional quality), historic photos from our archives, and user submitted photos (say a lineman snaps a great shot of ice on power lines).
The photos run with a brief caption, appear on the homepage as a small image but users can "click to enlarge." And they do. Whenever we run a heatmap on the site that's where people click.
Two sections are popular: Weekly employee profiles--they answer a brief questionnaire out about what they do, their current job, and hobbies, etc., & their photo. Our 1,200 employees are at 7 different locations so it helps build some unity. We also run a weekly list of names of workers with major service anniversaries or retiring that month.
Classified: It's just like the Classified section in a newspaper (lost and found; looking to buy; looking to sell; looking for directions; looking for a restaurant; looking for advice; etc.).
Employees can opt out of the classified group if they want, but the majority of them want it.
Our polls, which we mix up between fun stuff and corporate feedback so we can improve the employee experience. This is really working and it is keeping employees engaged. We have about 560 employees and have about 60% respond each week to the new question.
Our homepage that has our announcements and weekly feature/contest that either covers an employee wellness topic in conjunction with our HR team or an employee profile. That's exponentially our top content, followed by our photo directory and our internal job openings.
