We all have them, people who we follow that sometimes post borderline unbearable things on their Twitter. Items that make me cringe are posts such as, "I'm so tired!" or "Out of milk. Need to get more." We only have a certain level of patience for those people on our Twitter feed. That's why we want to know from you, "What tweets make you unfollow people?" Don't be shy, let us know what tweets really rile you up.
I usually follow people to keep up with news topics or topics I'm interested in writing about, but I follow people for personal reasons, too. However, I can't follow someone who uses the b-word or n-word repeatedly like there are no other words in the entire dictionary. I don't follow people who can't spell. As a copy editor, it BOTHERS me to see "your" and "you're" constantly spelled wrong. I can follow people who are sending random unimportant tweets like the milk one or how tired he/she is. That doesn't bother me so much as the ones that participate in those idiotic trending topics like #ghettocrayoncolors and #STFU. Seriously?! Some of the TT are okay, but I hate the negative ones. It's like, "Why do you have to take your bitter attitude out on Twitter?"
Those people in new relationships and constantly tweeting about it ("My BF is UH-mazing.") do me in. Actually the overuse of UH-mazing is an unfollow offense, too.
I follow people who seem to have something interesting to say, so I tend to unfollow on the same basis. But one recent comment brought an immediate unfollow. I used an alternate account to quietly mention to one tweeter that the information she had retweeted was false information making the rounds. Her reply: "It was a retweet. Tell the person who originated it." If you don't have some sense of responsibility to the truth, I'm not going to waste my time following.
Anyone who is consistently a negative, pessimistic, cynical whiner. Tell me something practical. Inspire me. Make me laugh, offer a solution or suggestion. Hell, make me cry, but stop your grumbling and find some happiness in your life.
Agree about the auto-DMs - don't do it! Also, if every post is about the product/company/client, I unfollow. I follow people hoping for some useful (or at least interesting) information and conversation. I'm always hoping that those who use Twitter as a megaphone/advertising platform will eventually get it, but many times they don't.
Auto-DMs are a surefire way to get unfollowed. ALL-CAPS and ASCII art streams of hearts and punctuation lead straight to the exit. Rude, vindictive, venomous, bigoted behavior generates a swift kick into the outbox.
