i used to say almost the same thing in a workshop I've given for nonwriters about how to get published. "Editors edit. It's what we do," I used to say. "You're content experts and we're word experts. And we help you sound good." These were folks in a technical specialty looking to get articles in trade pubs.
I found it helped people get past their pride of authorship/hurt feelings and understand the synergism between writers and editors.
As it came close to deadline and I'd had enough of explaining to radio reporters why I was editing their material I had a line which eventually made it on to a sweatshirt one Christmas:
"Because it's my show, that's why!"
I came across it honestly though because of what my predecessor used on us:
" This ain't no democracy"
Needless to say depending on how close you were to going live, there was often an explicative thrown in for emphasis.
