Some editors are failed writers, but so are most writers. -T.S. Eliot

i used to say almost the same thing in a workshop I've given for nonwriters about how to get published. "Editors edit. It's what we do," I used to say. "You're content experts and we're word experts. And we help you sound good." These were folks in a technical specialty looking to get articles in trade pubs.

I found it helped people get past their pride of authorship/hurt feelings and understand the synergism between writers and editors.

Absolutely. You may have the best of ideas, but if you fail to communicate them it stays within

As it came close to deadline and I'd had enough of explaining to radio reporters why I was editing their material I had a line which eventually made it on to a sweatshirt one Christmas:
"Because it's my show, that's why!"

I came across it honestly though because of what my predecessor used on us:

" This ain't no democracy"

Needless to say depending on how close you were to going live, there was often an explicative thrown in for emphasis.

Mike

And if I can add another post for general interest to all editors.

http://torontoist.com/2009/11/disgruntled_star_editor_takes_revenge.php

This apparently (the editor in me says it is not verified yet) is how a Disgruntled (Toronto) Star Editor Takes Constructive Revenge
