I was in a local bookstore yesterday & noticed the Canadian Press Stylebooks filed in the fashion/beauty section!
Part of me wanted to tell the clerks that the books didn’t belong there.
The other part of me won – I left the books as they were and imagined how upset some little fashionista would be when she got home, ripped open the plastic sealing the book, and instead of finding all the new stylish Canadian fashions, found writing lessons!!!!
This reminds me of a trip to Montreal. My friend and I walked into a bookstore and were greeted by a clerk speaking French. When she learned we didn't have that language, she got another clerk who patiently explained that we had walked into a bookstore. The books were arranged by subjects, she noted, and the prices of the books were clearly marked on the book covers.
Reflecting on this experience later that day, we decided that having recognized that we were Americans, the clerks must have assumed we were illiterate barbarians who had wandered into a bookstore by mistake.
Speaking of illiterate barbarians, back when there were video stores, the chain store near me would alphabetize "The Fifth Element" under F, but "A Little Night Music" under A.
Reminds me of the publisher who said they always put shelving categories on the backs of their books, even if the categories used exactly the same words as in the title of the book - could never trust it to be shelved logically otherwise!
