We are a global company looking at revamping our pretty archaic intranet. We've discovered that designing intranets IS definitely a speciality, not one that our current external Web firms boast. Does anyone have a suggestion on a design firm we should consider? And why? Have you used them?
I have worked with a firm that can build anything from intranets, to interactive websites and training programs, to iphone apps. They have a great design & site architectural team with some great programmers. You can contact Marcelo Vergara at Propaganda3 816-474-6333
I've worked on projects with Impresa Creative (www.impresacreative.com), owned by experienced web and print designer Brandy Sereno -- whose clients have included Comcast, Verizon and McDonalds.
From online bio: "I am well organized, a skillful planner, ask the right questions and come up with unexpected, effective, efficient solutions. I become an extension of their companies – a true partner, rather than a vendor."

Good luck upgrading Kohler's intranet!

You're exactly right: intranets are completely different animals than external web sites.
I'd recommend Prescient Digital Media. Their President, Toby Ward, writes the Intranet Blog and has contributed to Ragan.com. I've never worked directly with them, but follow them closely. They are technology-neutral, so they can help you determine your requirements and choose a platform that will work best with your company.
The big question, Kari, is whether you need actual design, or usability, or information architecture, all of which is quite different in the intranet space. I haven't seen many really talented folks in that space, frankly. At Goodyear, our internal folks did the redesign, and at National City, we used Sharepoint and again, the internal folks did the front-end design.
You also should connect on Twitter with @intrateam & @wedge for possible referrals.
